Broward Passes State's First Anti-Bullying Policy
Miami, FL - July 28, 2008

Students in Broward County have a new weapon against bullies. The Broward County School Board has approved the first school district Anti-Bullying Policy in Florida. The policy, which was adopted on July 22, is Florida's most comprehensive; and contains a full list of prohibited forms of harassment, bullying and discrimination. It was designed by the District's Office of Prevention Programs and Student Support Services, under the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Grant initiative.

Mentors Provide Support, Open Ears
Casper, WY - July 24, 2008

Their reasons for becoming mentors are similar: Being a role model and lending an ear to listen to problems. Michelle Smith and William McGrew both want to reach out to youth and make a difference in a child's life. Smith and McGrew are mentors for Champions, a new program funded in part through Natrona County School District's Safe Schools, Healthy Kids grant. Mercer House is a partner for the program, which was allocated about $600,000 for the next three years.

Peer Review Lets Students Resolve Behavior Issues
Milwaukee, WI - June 22, 2008

When Kevin Blackman joined the peer jury at James Madison Academic Campus this past school year, the 19-year-old senior worried his classmates would call him a snitch. After all, he and the other dozen students in the inaugural group would rule on disputes involving classmates accused of disrupting class, bullying or truancy — traditionally the work of an assistant principal. But being on the jury turned Blackman into a hero, not a snitch, in classmates’ eyes, he said.

Springfield School District considers notification system
Springfield, MO - May 7, 2008

In just a few months, parents of Springfield students could receive a phone call if school is canceled for an emergency, or even if their child has missed a class. The district is looking at putting a notification system in place by the fall. If everything goes through, parents could be contacted by phone, e-mail, or text message. The funding for the program would come from an existing Safe Schools Healthy Students grant. The system would work not only in emergency situations, but might also help in other ways. Associate Superintendent Dr. Peggy Riggs says, "All three companies that presented to us talked about an immediate increase in attendance which would be very helpful and beneficial for us."
